The Holdovers Movie review - Alexander Paynes drama is the feel-good movie of the year (By Shayen Unadkat)

‘The Holdovers’ is the ultimate feel-good movie, and is also one of the best of the year. Director Alex Payne captures the aesthetic of the 1970s with a tale that beautifully integrates comedy & a story of grief, along with the development of relationships with the unlikeliest of people.

Dominic Sessa and Paul Giamatti both ace their roles in 'The Holdovers'

From the first scene, it already feels like you are watching a vintage classic. The way the movie is shot takes reference from classics from the 70’s and 80’s, and allows you to feel more immersed in the world of the story. Payne pays homage to classic films with the usage of color along with certain shots to create a chilled out vibe that keeps you engaged, and it’s this work on the aesthetic that audiences will treasure as a result.

The plot follows a teen being left behind for Christmas with his teacher, whom he hates. This simplicity allows the movie to be completely character driven and not go into anything complex plot wise. The complexity, however, lies with the characters emotional states and how they must find a way to enjoy Christmas together despite their differences. This here is the heart of the film, as Payne and his crew craft these characters so well its like we’ve known them for so long - and when they reach a win or a loss in the film, we feel it as an audience.

Characters like Da'Vine Joy Taylor's 'Mary' add emotional depth to the film.

My only issues with the film would lie with not fleshing out enough time for some relationships. There are some clever plot points/character reveals within the film, and I feel as though the runtime could’ve been expanded to develop some of these moments in the story to add a greater level of emotional depth to the movie and to completely solidify these characters journeys even further.

The acting is incredible, and I most certainly think Paul Giamatti, who plays our lead as teacher Paul Hunham, will get an Oscar nomination. Dominic Sessa is fantastic in his own right too.

Ultimately, ‘The Holdovers’ is probably the best-drama comedy of the year, and is a repetitive must-watch for many Christmas holidays to come thanks to its infusion of humor, heart and a well crafted look of the 70’s!

OVERALL SCORE: 9.2/10 - MUST WATCH!

‘Nightbitch’ Movie review - Amy Adam’s latest can be appreciated for its uniqueness, yet fails to engage.

Have you ever seen a film that you appreciate for its uniqueness,  but it just doesn't work? I'm sure you've seen many, and unfortunately, ' Nightbitch ' (Starring Amy Adam's as our unnamed protagonist) falls in to that category for me. The movie explores, in a unique manner, the nature of motherhood - yet it intertwines crazy plot threads that make it an honestly jarring watch... The movie follows a woman who pauses her career to be a stay-at-home mom, but soon things take a surreal turn following her domestication.  Things are actually pretty great with this film for the majority of the first act. Some light-hearted humor shown through the dynamic of a mother taking care of her son whilst the father is off and earning money as the breadwinner despite the mother having a passion. Our protagonist can actually be relatable for some too, and she does have a lot of depth when we see what her passion is and how her life can be outside of taking care of her mischie...

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man Review: Disney Plus brings more dumb fun to the platform!

Your Friendly Neighborhood spider-man is a widely enjoyable take on the web-slinger from the episodes i’ve seen so far, though it doesn’t prove itself to be anything too special. The plot threads are fairly generic, but what will be most appreciated about this show - with its surprisingly solid animation - is its street level stakes with somewhat humanizing characters that many fans of the hero have been wishing for. Just don’t expect too much logic and go in for a nice development of the character of Peter Parker and this new gang of friends around him and you could get something out of the new Disney plus animation.  The Biggest problem with this show, however, is it seems to be not careful with its logical inconsistencies in its writing. There are plot holes littered throughout the first couple episodes, yet the fact that audiences will have fun (complimented by the thought that this is a TV watch) will allow audiences to see past this for the most part. Though it doesn...
