The Holdovers Movie review - Alexander Paynes drama is the feel-good movie of the year (By Shayen Unadkat)
‘The Holdovers’ is the ultimate feel-good movie, and is also one of the best of the year. Director Alex Payne captures the aesthetic of the 1970s with a tale that beautifully integrates comedy & a story of grief, along with the development of relationships with the unlikeliest of people.

From the first scene, it already feels like you are watching a vintage classic. The way the movie is shot takes reference from classics from the 70’s and 80’s, and allows you to feel more immersed in the world of the story. Payne pays homage to classic films with the usage of color along with certain shots to create a chilled out vibe that keeps you engaged, and it’s this work on the aesthetic that audiences will treasure as a result.
The plot follows a teen being left behind for Christmas with his teacher, whom he hates. This simplicity allows the movie to be completely character driven and not go into anything complex plot wise. The complexity, however, lies with the characters emotional states and how they must find a way to enjoy Christmas together despite their differences. This here is the heart of the film, as Payne and his crew craft these characters so well its like we’ve known them for so long - and when they reach a win or a loss in the film, we feel it as an audience.

My only issues with the film would lie with not fleshing out enough time for some relationships. There are some clever plot points/character reveals within the film, and I feel as though the runtime could’ve been expanded to develop some of these moments in the story to add a greater level of emotional depth to the movie and to completely solidify these characters journeys even further.
The acting is incredible, and I most certainly think Paul Giamatti, who plays our lead as teacher Paul Hunham, will get an Oscar nomination. Dominic Sessa is fantastic in his own right too.
Ultimately, ‘The Holdovers’ is probably the best-drama comedy of the year, and is a repetitive must-watch for many Christmas holidays to come thanks to its infusion of humor, heart and a well crafted look of the 70’s!
OVERALL SCORE: 9.2/10 - MUST WATCH!
